Appointment of bishop of Austin, U.S.A.

The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Daniel Elias Garcia of Monterey in California as bishop of Austin, United States of America.

Curriculum vitae

Bishop Daniel Elias Garcia was born on 30 August 1960 in Cameron, Texas. He carried out his ecclesiastical studies at the University of Saint Thomas, Saint Mary’s Seminary in Houston, and obtained a master’s degree in liturgy at Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota.

He was ordained a priest for the diocese of Austin on 28 May 1988.

He has held the following offices: parish vicar of Saint Catherine of Siena in Austin (1988-1990), Cristo Rey in Austin (1990-1991), Saint Louis in Austin (1991-1992), and Saint Mary Magdalene in Humble (1992-1995); parish priest of Saint Vincent de Paul in Austin (1995-2014); and vicar general and moderator of the Curia (2014).

He was appointed titular bishop of Capso and auxiliary of Austin on 21 January 2015, receiving episcopal ordination the following 3 March.

On 27 November 2018 he was appointed bishop of the diocese of Monterey in California.

 

Appointment of bishop of Nova Friburgo, Brazil

The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Pedro Cunha Cruz as bishop of the diocese of Nova Friburgo, Brazil, transferring him from the diocese of Campanha.

Curriculum vitae

Bishop Pedro Cunha Cruz was born on 16 June 1964 in Rio de Janeiro, in the metropolitan archdiocese of the same name. He carried out his studies in philosophy at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro and in theology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro. He obtained a licentiate in fundamental theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, and a licentiate and doctorate in philosophy from the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome.

He was ordained a priest for the metropolitan archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro on 4 August 1990.

He has held the following offices: parish vicar of Cristo Operário e Santo Cura d’Ars; parish priest of São Francisco de Assis, Santa Teresa de Jesus and Santa Rita; director of the São José Seminary; professor at the Pontifical Catholic University and director of the João Paulo II Ecclesiastical Faculty of Philosophy. He was appointed titular bishop of Agbia and auxiliary of the metropolitan archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro on 24 November 2010, receiving episcopal ordination on 5 February 2011. On 20 May 2015 he was appointed bishop coadjutor of Campanha, and became ordinary bishop of the same diocese on the following 25 November.
