My dear friends,

It is with immense joy that I greet you today, catechists of Vietnam, gathered with His Excellency Archbishop Joseph Nguyễn Năng, the Metropolitan of Saigon and President of the Bishops’ Conference. I thank each of you who have logged in from every province of Vietnam—and beyond—just days before the Jubilee of Youth in Rome. I am especially grateful that we are united in prayer in the presence of the holy relic of Blessed Andrew Phú Yên. On this solemn occasion, the 400th anniversary of his birth, we celebrate a great son of Vietnam – a catechist and martyr whose witness still inspires us. May the Lord bless this moment of encounter and grace.

On such an occasion it is important to reflect on Andrew Phú Yên’s life. Born in 1625, he became an invaluable assistant to the Jesuit missionaries who brought the Gospel to Vietnam after his baptism. Pope Francis reminded us inChristus Vivitthat Andrew “was imprisoned for his faith, and since he refused to renounce it, he was killed. Andrew died uttering the name of Jesus.”[1]In giving his life at only 19 years of age, Andrew answered Christ’s call to return “love for love”[2]to our Lord. His heroic witness earned him the title of Protomartyr of Vietnam, and he was beatified by Saint John Paul II in 2000. Today, we ask the Patron of Catechists to intercede for us, so that like him we may, with unshaken faith, invoke the name of Jesus, even when we find ourselves in difficulty.

In Vietnam, the Church is brimming with dedicated catechists—lay men and women, most of you young—who teach the faith to children and adolescents every week. Indeed, there are over 64,000 catechists in and outside your country. This vast group of faith-educators is a fundamental part of parish life. I am thankful for your generosity, each and every one of you. Never underestimate the gift you are: by your teaching and example, you draw children and youth into friendship with Jesus. You are sent by the Church to be living signs of God’s love: humble servants like Blessed Andrew, full of missionary zeal. The Church rejoices in you and encourages you to walk with joy in this noble mission.

It is said that while in prison, Andrew encouraged his fellow Christians to remain steadfast in their faith and asked them to pray that he might remain faithful to the end. Indeed, that profound moment reminds us that the Christian life, especially catechetical service, is never a solitary endeavour: we teach, and our community prays; we witness, and the Body of Christ sustains us in trial. This unity of prayer and service underscores the Church’s unity and the peace Christ gives us.

Furthermore, your ministry is deeply rooted in a strong family and cultural heritage. Pope Francis once spoke to you about the word “home” and all that it means.[3] Keep alive your love for your family and your native land. These treasures of culture and faith were passed on to you—especially the heroic faith of your parents and grandparents, who, like Blessed Andrew, bore witness in suffering and taught you to trust in God. Your roots and traditions are gifts from God;may they fill you withconfidence and joy as you share the faith with others.

In a few days, the Church will celebrate the Jubilee of Youth in Rome as part of this year’s Jubilee of Hope. “In the heart of each person, hope dwells as the desire and expectation of good things to come.”[4]Let this hope encourage you in your service. I invite you to be united in spirit with the young pilgrims in Rome and with all your brothers and sisters in Vietnam. Share with them the joyful confidence that “Christ is alive and he wants you to be alive!”[5]

My dear catechists, you are beloved by God and treasured by his Church. May Blessed Andrew Phú Yên guide you by his example. May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church and “Mother of Hope”[6]accompany you. And may the blessing of Almighty God, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit come down on all of you and remain with you for ever. Amen.

Miei cari amici,

È con immensa gioia che vi saluto oggi, catechisti del Vietnam, riuniti con Sua Eccellenza l’arcivescovo Joseph Nguyễn Năng, Metropolita di Saigon e Presidente della Conferenza episcopale. Ringrazio tutti voi che vi siete collegati da ogni provincia del Vietnam – e da oltre i suoi confini – a pochi giorni dal Giubileo dei Giovani a Roma. Sono particolarmente grato per il fatto che siamo uniti in preghiera alla presenza della santa reliquia del beato Andrew Phú Yên. In questa solenne occasione, il 400° anniversario della sua nascita, celebriamo un grande figlio del Vietnam - catechista e martire - la cui testimonianza ci ispira ancora. Che il Signore benedica questo momento di incontro e di grazia.

In un’occasione come questa è importante riflettere sulla vita di Andrew Phú Yên. Nato nel 1625, divenne un inestimabile assistente dei missionari gesuiti che, portarono il Vangelo in Vietnam dopo il suo battesimo. Papa Francesco ci ha ricordato in Christus vivit che Andrew “Venne fatto prigioniero per la sua fede e, poiché non volle rinunciarvi, fu ucciso. Morì dicendo: ‘’Gesù’” (Papa Francesco, Christus vivit, 3 marzo 2019, n. 54). Donando la sua vita a soli 19 anni, Andrew rispose alla chiamata di Cristo a restituire “amore per amore” a Nostro Signore (Giovanni Paolo II, Omelia per la beatificazione di 44 servi di Dio, 5 marzo 2000, n. 6). La sua eroica testimonianza gli è valso il titolo di protomartire del Vietnam, ed è stato beatificato da san Giovanni Paolo II nel 2000. Oggi, chiediamo al patrono dei catechisti di intercedere per noi, affinché, come lui, possiamo invocare, con fede incrollabile, il nome di Gesù, anche quando ci troviamo in difficoltà.

In Vietnam, la Chiesa è piena di catechisti devoti – laici e laiche, la maggior parte giovani – che ogni settimana insegnano la fede i bambini e ad adolescenti. Di fatto, ci sono oltre 64.000 catechisti dentro e fuori il vostro Paese. Questo vasto gruppo di educatori della fede è parte fondamentale della vita parrocchiale. Sono grato per la vostra generosità, a ciascuno di voi. Non sottovalutate mai il dono che siete: con il vostro insegnamento e il vostro esempio, attirate bambini e giovani all’amicizia con Gesù. Siete inviati dalla Chiesa per essere segni viventi dell’amore di Dio: umili servitori come il beato Andrew, colmi di zelo missionario. La Chiesa gioisce in voi e vi incoraggia a camminare con gioia in questa nobile missione.

Si dice che mentre era in prigione, Andrew incoraggiava i suoi compagni cristiani a restare saldi nella loro fede e chiedeva loro di pregare affinché lui potesse rimanere fedele fino alla fine. In effetti, quel momento profondo ci ricorda che la vita cristiana, specialmente il servizio catechetico, non è mai un’impresa solitaria: noi insegniamo e la nostra comunità prega; noi testimoniamo e il Corpo di Cristo ci sostiene nella prova. Questa unità di preghiera e di servizio sottolinea l’unità della Chiesa e la pace che Cristo ci dona.

Inoltre, il vostro ministero è profondamente radicato in una solida eredità familiare e culturale. Papa Francesco una volta vi ha parlato della parola “casa” e di tutto ciò che significa (Cfr. Papa Francesco, Videomessaggio del Santo Padre ai giovani del Vietnam, 20 novembre 2019). Mantenete vivo il vostro amore per la vostra famiglia e per la vostra terra natia. Questi tesori di cultura e di fede vi sono stati trasmessi, specialmente l’eroica fede dei vostri genitori e dei vostri nonni, che, come il beato Andrew, hanno reso testimonianza nel dolore e vi hanno insegnato a confidare in Dio. Le vostre radici e tradizioni sono doni di Dio; che possano riempirvi di fiducia e di gioia mentre condividete la fede con gli altri.

Tra pochi giorni, la Chiesa celebrerà il Giubileo dei Giovani a Roma nell’ambito del Giubileo della Speranza di quest’anno. “Nel cuore di ogni persona è racchiusa la speranza come desiderio e attesa del bene” (Spes non confundit, 9 maggio 2024, n. 1). Lasciate che questa speranza vi incoraggi nel vostro servizio. Vi invito a essere uniti in spirito con i giovani pellegrini a Roma e con tutti i vostri fratelli e sorelle in Vietnam. Condividete con loro la gioiosa fiducia che “Lui [Cristo] vive e ti vuole vivo!2 (Papa Francesco, Christus vivit, 3 marzo 2019, n. 1).

Miei cari catechisti, siete amati da Dio e preziosi per la sua Chiesa. Che il beato Andrew Phú Yên vi guidi con il suo esempio. Che la Beata Vergine Maria, Madre della Chiesa e “Madre della speranza” (Spes non confundit, 9 maggio 2024, n. 24) vi accompagni. E la benedizione dell’Onnipotente, Padre, Figlio e Spirito Santo, discenda su tutti voi e con voi rimanga sempre. Amen.
