Thank you, good evening.

Dear brothers and sisters,

I am happy to stay a little with you, who form the large working community of the Dicastery for Communication. Today I see you in “family format”, and I rejoice with you because the Church is a family, a family of families. I am also pleased to meet you in this place, which reminds us of Pope Leo XIII, and in particular his attention to the means of social communication.

You come from many countries. You learned different languages as children and also carry out different activities. But all this variety is placed at the service of a single purpose: to help the Pope and the Holy See communicate the Good News to all the world. As Saint Paul writes in the First Letter to the Corinthians, there are various charisms, but only one Spirit; there are diverse ministries, but only one Lord; there are various activities, but only one God who works in all of them (cf. 12:4-6).

I congratulate you for the network that you have been building within the Dicastery for years; and also because you do so, as Pope Francis would say, in an “outgoing” way, that is, to cast this net between the Holy See and the world, “out into the deep”, to the ends of the earth. It is first and foremost a network of people, each one with his or her skills, made available to the Church. It is a network that offers itself to the world in order to share truth, to help see and understand, always with love. It is a network where the roles are different, but no-one is more important than the others.

Little by little, I am getting to know you. I know that you work with passion, to spread the words and deeds of the Pope everywhere. You do so every day, in a discreet and hidden way. But today I am glad, because I have the opportunity to see you, to meet you, even more so in this family setting, all together.

I have been told that you meet every year for a simple picnic. This is very good: that, beyond work, you can share moments of leisure and prayer. And this time you wanted to do it today, so that afterwards you can come to Saint Peter’s Square to pray together for peace. Yes, how important it is that our communication be accompanied by prayer! I would say that this makes all the difference. The world may not know this, may not understand it, but we do, and we must always try to do it: accompany our daily work of communication with prayer.

Dear friends, thank you for this beautiful moment! I bless you all with affection, especially the children and your loved ones who are ill. May Our Lady assist you and protect your families. Thank you all!

So, with the little ones, with the grown-ups, we all know that God is the Father, and so let us pray together as Jesus taught us.

[Recitation of the Our Father and blessing]
