The fifth General Congregation of the Cardinals began this morning at 9.00 with a moment of prayer. There were more than 180 participants, of whom just over 100 were electors.
The prayer was followed by the oath-taking rite, in accordance with the provisions of the Apostolic Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis.
Then, in accordance with the provisions of the Apostolic Constitution, the composition of the Particular Congregation of the Camerlengo’s three Cardinal Assistants was renewed.
On this occasion, Cardinal Reinhard Marx was confirmed, as coordinator of the Council for the Economy, whereas the other two members were selected by lot: Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle and Cardinal Dominique Mamberti.
During the session, some 20 interventions were recorded. The contributions engaged with themes of particular relevance for the future of the Church: the relationship with the contemporary world and some emerging challenges, evangelization, the relationship with other faiths, and the issue of abuse. The qualities that the new Pontiff will have to possess in order to respond effectively to these challenges were discussed.
In addition, the start date of the Conclave was established. It will begin in the morning of 7 May with the Holy Mass pro eligendo Romano Pontifice (for the election of the Roman Pontiff) in Saint Peter’s Basilica, and in the afternoon the cardinals will enter the Sistine Chapel and begin the voting operations.
Finally, it was reported that tomorrow, at 9.00, Dom Donato Ogliari, O.S.B., Abbot of Saint Paul Outside-the-Walls, will give the first meditation, as indicated in the Apostolic Constitution.
The Congregation concluded at 12.25.
Work will commence shortly in the Sistine Chapel, where the Conclave will be held.
The Congregations will continue in the coming days, every morning at 9.00, with the exception of Thursday 1 May and Sunday 4 May, barring any variations that may be decided by the Congregation of Cardinals.
