The Sixth General Congregation of the Cardinals opened this morning at 9:00 a.m. with a moment of prayer, followed by a meditation given by Dom Donato Ogliari, O.S.B., Abbot of Saint Paul Outside-the-Walls, which lasted until 9:40 a.m.

The session was attended by 183 cardinals, more than 120 of whom were electors (124). There were approximately 20 contributions.

The focus of the reflections was the role of the Church in today’s world, and the challenges she faces. The cardinals shared different perspectives, enriched by the experiences and contexts of the various continents, questioning what response the Church is required to offer in these times.

It was announced that two cardinal electors will not take part in the Conclave for health reasons. More Cardinals are expected to arrive in the coming days.

During yesterday’s congregation, the College decided to send a message to the world to give thanks for the participation in the recent events and support received in the days following the death of Pope Francis. The message was made public this morning.

The Congregation ended at 12:30 p.m.
