FROM 21 TO 23 FEBRUARY, JUBILEE OF DEACONS
(Vatican City, 21 February 2025) – From Friday 21 to Sunday 23 February 2025 the fourth of the major Jubilee events will be held: the Jubilee dedicated to Deacons, which will bring to Rome more than six thousand pilgrims, from approximately 100 countries around the world.
Among these, to mention only the most represented, almost 4000 permanent deacons, with their families, will come from Italy, 1300 from the United States, 656 from France, 350 from Spain, 230 from Brazil, 160 from Germany, and 150 from Mexico. Numerous groups will also arrive from Poland, Colombia, the United Kingdom, and Canada. There will also be representations from countries such as Cameroon, Nigeria, India, Indonesia, and Australia.
Twenty-three will receive the holy Order of the Diaconate during the Holy Mass on Sunday 23 February, in Saint Peter’s Basilica, at 9.00. For the Eucharistic Celebration, the Holy Father Francis has delegated Msgr. Rino Fisichella, pro-prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization. Two of the new deacons are from Brazil, six from Colombia, one from France, three from Italy, three from Mexico, two from Poland, three from Spain, and three from the United States.
On Friday 21 February, the pilgrims will be welcomed in twelve churches in the centre of Rome, and at 15.30 there will be a first moment of prayer with the joint recitation of the middle Hour. Later, in the same churches, from 16.00 to 18.00 the catecheses for the deacons will be held; these will be divided by language (Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Polish, French and English). The catecheses, followed by the sharing of experiences, will be held by twelve bishops and will have as their guiding theme “Concrete signs of hope in the diaconal ministry”.
The catechesis will be held in the Church of Santa Maria in Vallicella, the Basilica of San Giovanni Battista dei Fiorentini, the Basilica of Santa Maria in Aracoeli, the Shrine of Santa Maria delle Grazie al Trionfale, the Church of San Gregorio VII, the Basilica of Sant’Andrea della Valle, the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Damaso, the Basilica of Ss. Ambrogio e Carlo al Corso, the Shrine of San Salvatore in Lauro, in the Chapel of Santa Monica degli Agostiniani, the Church of San Lorenzo in Piscibus, and the Basilica of Sant’Agostino in Campo Marzio.
On Saturday 22, from 9.00 to 14.00, it will be possible for all the participants to make the pilgrimage to the Holy Door of Saint Peter’s. At the same time, for those enrolled in the International Meeting “Deacons in a synodal and missionary Church: how to be witnesses of Hope”, held by the Dicastery for the Clergy, the work will be held at the Auditorium Conciliazione, from 9.30 to 13.00.
The Jubilee of Deacons will continue on Saturday from 18.00 with a prayer vigil in the Paul VI Hall, and will conclude on Sunday 23 February, as previously indicated, at 9.00, with the Eucharistic celebration at Saint Peter’s Basilica.
