PRESS RELEASE - DICASTERY FOR EVANGELIZATION

FROM 12 TO 14 MAY, JUBILEE OF THE EASTERN CHURCHES

 

(Vatican City, 12 May 2025) – From Monday 12 to Wednesday 14 May 2025, the thirteenth major Jubilee event will be held, the Jubilee of the Eastern Churches, which will bring to Rome around 5000 faithful and representatives of the Eastern Catholic Churches, Patriarchs and Metropolitans. The participants come from countries from all continents, including Italy, the United States, Ukraine, Spain, Ethiopia, France, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Canada, Pakistan, Colombia and Bangladesh.

On Monday 12 May at 8.30, the celebration of the Divine Liturgy in the Ethiopian Rite will be held at the Chapel of the Choir of Saint Peter’s Basilica, by the Ethiopian Church and the Eritrean Church; at 13.00, the celebration of the Divine Liturgy in the Armenian Rite at the Pauline Chapel of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major by the Armenian Church. Also on Monday 12, at 15.00, there will be the celebration of the Divine Liturgy in the Coptic Rite at the Pauline Chapel of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major by the Coptic Church. The following day, the celebrations will begin again at 13.00 with the Divine Liturgy in the East Syriac Rite (Anaphora of Addai and Mari) at Saint Peter’s Basilica, by the Chaldean Church and the Syro-Malabar Church. At 18.45 there will be the Vespers prayer in the West Syriac Rite at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, by the Syriac Catholic Church, the Maronite Church and the Syro-Malankara Church, followed by the intonation of the Akathistos at the Sacristy of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major by the Roman Colleges with a Byzantine presence.

The pilgrims participating the Jubilee of the Eastern Churches will then meet the Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, in audience on Wednesday 14 May at 10.00 in the Paul VI Hall. At 14.00, the Jubilee will conclude with the celebration of the Divine Liturgy in the Byzantine Rite at Saint Peter’s Basilica, by the Melkite Greek-Catholic, Ukrainian Greek-Catholic, and Romanian Greek-Catholic Churches, together with other sui iuris Churches of Byzantine Rite.
