PRESS RELEASE

MONDAY 15 SEPTEMBER, THE JUBILEE OF CONSOLATION

(Vatican City, 12 September 2025) – On Monday 15 September, the Jubilee of Consolation will be held in Rome, a special Jubilee event of the Holy Year dedicated to all those who are experiencing, or have experienced in life, moments of particular difficulty, grief, suffering or poverty. More than 8,500 people from all over the world are expected to attend, in particular from Italy, Germany, Poland, Spain, the United States, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Peru, Bolivia, and Australia.

Many associations, foundations and religious organizations engaged in accompanying those in need of support and care have also been involved. These include the Association “Figli in cielo”, which offers support to families who have experienced the premature loss of a child or of a loved one, and the Casa Famiglia Paolo VI, which provides free accommodation for families who transfer to Rome for their children’s cancer treatment. Then, there is the Villa Maraini Association, which provides therapeutic programmes for those suffering from drug addiction, alcohol abuse, gambling and new addictions such as technology, as well as rehabilitation for prisoners; the Italian Association for Road Accident Victims - Onlus, which offers psychological and bureaucratic support to the families of victims; and the Scintille di Speranza (Sparks of Hope) Association, at the Laurentino cemetery in Rome, which accompanies those who have suffered bereavement in the family.

The Jubilee event will begin in the morning of 15 September, between the hours of 8.00 and 12.00, with the group pilgrimages to the Holy Door of Saint Peter’s Basilica. In the afternoon the prayer vigil will begin at 17.00, inside the Basilica, presided over by the Holy Father Pope Leo XIV. The Liturgy of the Word, centred on the parable of the good Samaritan, the passage from the Gospel of Mark (Mk 10:25-37), will be followed by testimonies from two women: Diane Foley, from the United States, and Lucia Di Mauro Montanino, from Naples. Foley is touring the world to tell the story of reconciliation and forgiveness, thanks to the strength of faith, with Alexanda Kotey, of the Jihadist group who killed Foley’s son, the journalist Jim Foley, in Syria in 2014. Lucia Di Mauro Montanino instead will tell how she transformed the pain of her husband’s murder into rebirth, through the encounter with and accompaniment of Antonio, one of the boys who participated in the aggression. At the end of the testimonies, the Pope will deliver his homily to those present.

In the Basilica, during the Vigil, the statue of Our Lady of Hope from the parish-shrine of Battipaglia will be present. Every participant will then receive the gift of the “Agnus Dei”, a wax medallion depicting the paschal Lamb, symbol of the resurrection and sign of hope, which will be blessed by the Holy Father during the Vigil. On the other side of the medallion there is a representation of the Madonna Salus Populi Romani, dear to the city of Rome.
