PRESS RELEASE

FROM 26 TO 28 SEPTEMBER, JUBILEE OF CATECHISTS

(Vatican City, 24 September 2025) – From 26 to 28 September the Jubilee of Catechists will be held, which will bring together in Rome over twenty thousand pilgrims from 115 countries in the world, with numerous delegations from Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Poland, Ukraine, the United States, Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Mexico, Peru, Colombia, the Philippines, India and Australia. The Jubilee event, dedicated to those who commit themselves daily to catechesis, particularly involves the diocesan and national Offices for Catechesis, with the episcopal Conferences of the various countries.

The Jubilee will begin on the morning of Friday 26 September, with pilgrimages of catechists to the Holy Door of Saint Peter’s Basilica between the hours of 8.00 and 17.00, and will continue with the prayer Vigila at 18.30 in the Basilica, presided over by Archbishop Rino Fisichella, pro-prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization. In the second part of the liturgy of the Word, focused on the passage of the disciples of Emmaus (Lk 24: 13-33a), three testimonies from catechists will be offered: from Liliana (Italy), Paulo Agostinho Matica (Mozambique) and Estela Evangelista Torres (Mexico), who will tell their stories of service in the local contexts from which they come.

On Saturday 27 September, at 10.00, all the catechists are invited to participate in the Jubilee Audience in Saint Peter’s Square, with Pope Leo XIV who, in his meditation, will specially address the pilgrims participating in the Jubilee. In the afternoon, at 16.00, the catechists will gather in churches in the centre of Rome for the catechesis with bishops, which will be held in Italian, English, Portuguese, Spanish, French and Polish.

The Jubilee will conclude on Sunday 28 September with Holy Mass in Saint Peter’s Square, presided over by the Holy Father at 10.00 during which the Pontiff will institute 39 new catechists. The candidates for the lay ministry of catechist, who will also receive the crucifix from the Pope as a sign of their special vocation, come from Italy, Spain, England, Portugal, Brazil, Mexico, India, South Korea, Timor Leste, the United Arab Emirates, the Philippines, the United States, Mozambique, Brazil, Peru and the Dominican Republic.
