Dichiarazione del Presidente della Pontificia Commissione
per la Tutela dei Minori

Con profonda umiltà e sincera gratitudine, ringrazio il Santo Padre, Papa Leone XIV, per la mia nomina a Presidente della Pontificia Commissione per la Tutela dei Minori. Sono onorato della fiducia che mi ha accordato, pienamente consapevole del grave e sacro compito affidato alla Commissione: aiutare la Chiesa a diventare sempre più vigile, responsabile e compassionevole nella sua missione di proteggere i più vulnerabili tra noi.
Desidero esprimere i miei più sentiti ringraziamenti al mio predecessore, il cardinale Seán O'Malley, la cui leadership coraggiosa e profetica ha lasciato un segno indelebile non solo nella Chiesa, ma nella società intera. In tempi di profonda difficoltà, il cardinale O'Malley è stato una bussola morale per i fedeli e per le persone di buona volontà di tutto il mondo. Ha sostenuto con fermezza il primato dell'ascolto delle voci delle vittime di abusi, dando loro spazio per essere ascoltate, credute e accompagnate nella loro ricerca della verità, della giustizia, della guarigione e di una riforma istituzionale significativa. La sua eredità è quella di una coraggiosa fedeltà al Vangelo e alla dignità di ogni persona umana.
Nel proseguire il mio lavoro con la Commissione, mi impegno, insieme ai membri e il personale della Commissione, a costruire su questa eredità. Le nostre priorità si concentreranno sul sostegno alle Chiese, in particolare quelle che ancora stentano di attuare adeguate misure di tutela. Promuoveremo la sussidiarietà e l'equa condivisione delle risorse affinché tutte le parti della Chiesa, indipendentemente dalla loro ubicazione geografica o dalle circostanze, possano garantire i più elevati standard di tutela.
Riconosciamo che è un cammino di conversione che tutti noi continuiamo a percorrere. Come ci ha sempre ricordato Papa Francesco, solo a questa condizione il Vangelo potrà essere veramente ascoltato e credibile. Conto sull'assistenza esperta, sulla saggezza e sulla dedizione dei miei colleghi della Commissione nel portare avanti insieme questa missione.

on the nomination of Archbishop Thibault Verny
as President of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors
Our Holy Father Pope Leo XIV, has affirmed the continued priority of the Commission’s work for the Universal Church in his thoughtful appointment of His Excellency Thibault Verny, Archbishop of Chambéry, France, as President of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors.
Having worked closely with Archbishop Verny through his membership on the Commission since 2022, I have witnessed his dedication to the prevention of abuse in the life of the Church. In addition to important contributions to the work of the Commission, the Archbishop has years of in-depth experience working with law enforcement, other civil authorities, and Church leadership to ensure accountability for the serious failures of the Church in France. He has been at the forefront in seeking healing and reconciliation with survivors. Archbishop Verny played an important role in the development and implementation of substantive policies and procedures, with cultural specificity, for the prevention of any recurrence of abuse. It is a blessing for all people that Pope Leo has entrusted the leadership of the Commission to the Archbishop, a collaborative leader committed to advancing the global adoption of protection and safeguarding, to as best possible assure the safety of those in the care of the Church throughout the world.
At this time, I also wish to honor our late Holy Father, Pope Francis, who initiated the Pontifical Commission in 2013. I was humbled to have been appointed President of the Commission at its inception. In collaboration with the Members and Commission staff, we have established policies and procedures for protection and safeguarding, always aware of the importance of recognition, resolution, and peace for all persons impacted by abuse. I am grateful to all my colleagues associated with the Commission, those currently active and those who served in prior years, for their significant time and effort given to this mission and their unwavering commitment to the protection of children and vulnerable adults.
Also, I wish to express my gratitude to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV for ensuring that the Commission continues to be a priority for the Church. The Holy Father's words and deeds in these early months of his pontificate assure the world that the Church will not grow complacent in her efforts to as best possible ensure the protection of children, vulnerable adults, and all people in our communities.
